Happy Friday! Today, the whole FanFic Friday team is sharing what we’ve been reading—fic, books, newspapers… I kid, I kid, no one reads newspapers anymore. Annie and I used to do these types of posts in those first dark days of my fic break; we thought it would be fun to bring the feature back (cue Annie saying “the feature’s dead Angela”) and have the whole team tell you what they’ve been reading over the past few weeks [Annie: *swinging earbuds* I need your playlists]. These aren’t necessarily reccs but you will most likely find something new to check out! I’ll go first. :)
Read the rest, after the jump!
Debb:
I read a lot, like almost constantly. I read while getting the kids ready to go to school, I read on the treadmill, I read while cooking (yep, I’ve burned things), bathing, and before falling asleep. I read while watching movies (husband quizzes me to see if I’m actually watching the movie–it’s like a party trick lol [Michelle: My hubs does this too!]) and while waiting for…anything really. This week, due to the Polar Vortex (best name for a weather event ever!) and a blizzard, I had some extra reading time. Hence, the following list. ;)
I’ve been reading the third in the Game of Thrones series by George R R Martin, A Storm of Swords, for what felt like ages. I kept picking it up and putting it down after a dozen pages. It’s not the fault of the story or writing; these are fantastic books. I think it’s because I’d already watched the show and knew what was going to happen. On the up side, watching the show provided me with these visuals…
…and the last quarter of the book is material not covered in Season Three of Game of Thrones so it was much more captivating. I’m still on the fence about reading the next in the series. Maybe I’ll read it in conjunction with the airing of season four… *wanders off, muttering to self*
Sorry.
I’ve also been reading The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (have to read it before I see the movie) and just started Slammerkin by Emma Donoghue (historical romance-described as “bawdy” “costume drama” and a “heady, colourful romp” SOLD lol). I’m hoping this book will fill the hole in my heart left by The Painted Girls which I read last year. I’m not far into either book; I’m at the stage where I read bits of both until one just grabs me and won’t let go (does anyone else do this?). LOL I’m always reading 2-3 books at a time!
As for fic, I’ve been reading a Harry Potter story called Anbar by Sherbert20111. It’s a Cedric fic and he’s kind of a bad boy. I’m not done yet but so far he’s going after Ginny and Hermione because he wants a challenge. I know, he sounds a bit skeezy but he’s a complicated guy so I’m just enjoying the ride (heh). There is also more going on than conquest…Snape is involved and things are getting twisty. The writer does an amazing job with the Harry Potter world, the character voices are bang on and the goings on at Hogwart’s read realistically but with an edge and a darker undertone. Really cool. Shall we look at Ced? Right on.
I’m also loving iambeagle’s Gate 19; such a sweet Edward and a really funny Bella. That’s a WIP with a “I’ll be home for Christmas” theme but it’s not complete yet. Meg’s been updating every other day or so. And I’m catching up on counselor’s Look How You Turned Out. I wanted to read as she was updating but just couldn’t keep up over the holidays. Although I did peek when it was lemon time. *blush*
Annie:
Over the holidays I mostly read.. wait for it… holiday fics. Then I saw this photo…
…and OH MAH GAAAHHHHH! I had to start rereading the first Outlander (by Diana Gabaldon) book straight away. That’s Claire and Jamie from the Starz Outlander TV series they’re filming right now. EEEEEEEEE! *grabs Deb and Michelle’s hands and runs in circles* Jamie is sweet, funny, tender and yet manly to the max. [deb: so manly. *stares at wall*] Read Outlander and join us in our swooning.
As for fic I’ve been reading a couple of holiday WIPs that are finishing up: Gate 19 by iambeagle After finding out her flight from Denver to Seattle has been cancelled, Bella accepts a ride from a stranger who is also hoping to get home for Christmas.
Also: The Red Coats by ericastwilight She loves the holidays. He loathes them. As new neighbors, they have to learn to tolerate each other. The problem for Edward is that she’s irresistible in red. Can she bring the Grinch around in time to save him from a lonely New Year? I’ve enjoyed both quite a bit. [Michelle: Annie, I have both of these on my read list.]
I also managed to finish a short completed multi-chap, One-Night Stand in Locked Down London by BlueIsSoul which is funny clever and I highly recommend. [deb: ooooo I've had this on my to-read list for a while! *pounces* Also, check out Katiebird's review HERE]
Next on my to-read list is Gertrude Bell, Queen of the Desert by Georgina Howell , for no reason… *shifty eyes* [deb: I have a goodreads shelf called "Rob made me do it" lol]
I loved the first two books, Outlander and Dragonfly in Amber. This book is amazing, but for the first 250 pages, the main characters, Claire and Jamie, aren’t actually together. Reading about them living their lives without each other was hard, but the author, Diana Gabaldon, does such an amazing job with the historical details, that I am still riveted.
Happy Fan Fic Friday everyone!!
Dear Deb, Annie, and KB… I just wanted to let you know I’ll probably give up twitter…. (I can just imagine your shocked faces and reactions) [deb: *SCREAMS*]
“But why, Michelle??” “Why?”
Because it’s the devil… the devil, I tell you! So many books. So many fics. Just not enough time to read them all.
So, I’m reading Outlander. I blame Deb, Annie, and Purelyamuse.
That’s right, I blame you ladies for being up all night and ignoring my housework. [deb: ahh, it finally snagged you, huh? I mean, aye? Also, been there, done that. JAMMF, GAH!] I’ve just started the second book in the series and I think I’m finding my groove. Now, if I could just find my vacuum.During the holidays, I of course reread The Naughty Elf by Twilly. And I finally, FINALLY got to read the end of Sacrifices by Enthralled. I’ve only been waiting for the ending of this fic since 2007!! Plus, I’ve been on the look out for more holiday fics for Annie’s Holiday TwiFic Extravaganza page.I even found time to read Kresley Cole’s new series called The Professional. It’s a three part series. Short reads but very worth it. Book three comes out January 20!! “From #1 New York Times bestselling author Kresley Cole comes The Professional—the first scorching installment in her Game Maker series, an erotica collection that has readers asking: How hot is too hot?” [deb: I clicked the link. I like hotter than hot so I'm going to check these out. Yow.]
Guys, if you haven’t read Jane’s Melody by Ryan Winfield, you’re missing out. Take a break from swoony Jamie and add this to your reading list. Sometimes you need a book like this to remind you that life is to be cherished and happiness can be found in unexpected ways!
As for right now, I’m heading back to read Outlander and all the things about kilts. Aye, it’ll be a good read to be sure of it! << Jamie’s voice
